(B) ONGOING PROGRAMMES

Karnataka Regional Organization for Social Service (KROSS) has launched a dynamic women empowerment program aimed at improving the social, economic, political, and legal status of women, especially from marginalized communities. The initiative focuses on promoting gender equality and dismantling systemic barriers, equipping women with the knowledge and tools to assert their rights and actively participate in governance and community development. A key component of the program is fostering women’s leadership through participation in local governance, such as village councils. This enhances decision-making skills and inspires broader societal change. Leadership training, mentorship, and advocacy campaigns help build confidence and empower women to influence their communities positively. KROSS also forms federations and community-based organizations (CBOs) that provide platforms for women to unite, share experiences, and collectively advocate for their rights. These groups engage with government bodies, enabling access to essential services and fostering long-term development. Special emphasis is placed on empowering historically oppressed groups, including Dalits and indigenous women, to challenge entrenched social hierarchies. Through capacity-building, community engagement, and promotion of self-reliance, the program works toward a more just and inclusive society where women can thrive and lead.
The SPARSHA cancer campaign, initiated by Caritas India in New Delhi, stands as a powerful symbol of compassion and holistic care in the fight against cancer. Inspired by the Sanskrit word "Sparsha," meaning touch, the campaign emphasizes the healing power of human connection, emotional support, and selfless service, which are often as crucial as medical treatment in a patient’s journey. The program focuses on fostering resilience, dignity, and hope among cancer patients and survivors. A compelling example of this mission in action was seen during an awareness event where a cancer survivor was publicly honored for her strength and perseverance, showing how emotional encouragement can uplift even in the toughest battles. SPARSHA’s outreach in Shimoga and Chikmagalur extends beyond emotional support to practical action. It tackles cancer myths, promotes early screenings like mammograms and Pap smears, and advocates for lifestyle changes, including quitting tobacco and adopting organic farming. By distributing organic seeds, the campaign connects healthy diets with cancer prevention. Backed by the Malnad Social Service Society (MSSS) under the Diocese of Bhadravathi, SPARSHA plays a critical role in educating women about breast and cervical cancers. Through education, awareness, community engagement, and survivor stories, SPARSHA is transforming lives and building a healthier, cancer-aware future for vulnerable communities.
"Tuition for Tent Children" is an educational initiative that provides schooling for children living in temporary shelters such as tents, refugee camps, and unstable housing. These children, often displaced due to natural disasters, conflicts, or economic hardships, face severe disruptions in their education. The program aims to bridge the educational gap by offering tailored tuition that helps them catch up academically and reintegrate into formal schooling systems. The initiative focuses on core subjects like language, mathematics, and science, ensuring that children receive age-appropriate instruction despite their inconsistent schooling history. Teachers adapt lessons to meet individual needs, recognizing that many students have missed significant portions of their education. By maintaining a structured learning environment, the program supports children's long-term academic success and future employment opportunities. Beyond academics, "Tuition for Tent Children" provides crucial psychosocial support. Many of these young learners have endured trauma due to displacement, instability, or conflict, which can impact their mental well-being. The program incorporates elements of emotional care, helping children cope with stress, process their experiences, and rebuild a sense of normalcy. Ultimately, this initiative not only upholds children's right to education but also strengthens their resilience, giving them the tools they need for a stable and hopeful future.
"Tuition for Slum Children" is a vital educational initiative aimed at supporting children living in urban slums, where access to quality education is often limited or absent. These children face numerous challenges, including financial instability, lack of parental literacy, overcrowded households, and the daily pressure to prioritize survival over schooling. As a result, many fall behind in their studies or drop out altogether, leading to a cycle of poverty and limited future prospects. This program addresses these challenges by offering free or low-cost academic support outside regular school hours, with a focus on key subjects such as mathematics, language, and science. These foundational areas are critical for a child’s academic success and long-term development. The initiative stands out for its emphasis on personalized learning, allowing educators to work in smaller groups and cater to each child’s unique learning pace and needs—something often impossible in large public school classrooms. Beyond academics, the program fosters a safe and encouraging environment where children feel valued and confident to express themselves. This emotional support is crucial in building self-esteem, curiosity, and a genuine love for learning. By bridging the educational divide, "Tuition for Slum Children" empowers underprivileged students to dream bigger, learn better, and access brighter futures.
The Children Sponsorship Program by MSSS (Mangalore Social Service Society) supports former residents of St. Alphonsa’s Children’s Home in Umblebylu, India. Initially a residential home for 30–40 underprivileged and semi-orphaned girls from remote villages, it focused on providing holistic education and overall development. The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 forced the closure of schools and hostels, disrupting the children’s learning and pushing many into field labor due to lack of access to online education. In response, MSSS shifted to a community-based education model with the support of Kindermissionswerk. Children were organized into four area-based groups, each supported by a dedicated teacher who offered daily guided tuition. The program also provided study materials, nutritious food kits, medical care, and school supplies like uniforms and stationery. Teachers regularly interacted with local schools to track academic progress and helped prepare students for exams and competitions. Over 60 children benefit from this initiative, which operates with strong support from families and community members who provide space for tuition sessions. This localized model ensures continued education while allowing children to remain with their families. It fosters emotional well-being, academic growth, and resilience through consistent guidance and donor support.
With joy and gratitude, the inauguration of the new Palliative Care Center in Umblebylu was celebrated on February 26th, marking a significant milestone in the diocese’s mission of compassionate service. The center, dedicated to providing quality care for those in need, is a result of visionary leadership and collective effort. Special thanks are extended to Bishop Mar Joseph Arumachadath for his inspiring guidance and blessing of the facility, making the event truly memorable. Key contributors include Fr. Jose Chacko and Mrs. Merlin from the USA, whose fundraising efforts—especially through the Global Action Coalition—were instrumental. Fr. Tomy Kariyilakulam, Health Commission Secretary, played a pivotal role in the project’s timely execution, showing immense dedication throughout. The event was graced by several dignitaries, including Umblebylu Panchayat President Mr. Jomy, Pastoral Council Secretary, priests, religious sisters, trustees, and parish council members. Fr. Sanu and the local community also offered invaluable support and encouragement. The center now features eight self-contained rooms, transformed from an existing building, ready to offer healing and peace. Admissions for new patients will begin in the first week of June. Gratitude is extended to all who supported this noble mission through prayers, time, or resources.
Mazdoor Suraksha Yojana (MSY) is a significant initiative launched by the Workers India Federation in collaboration with the Labor Commission of the Catholic Bishops Conference of India. The primary focus of this initiative is to provide a safety net to unorganized workers, particularly those involved in agriculture, self-employment, or daily wage labor. These workers, often part of the most vulnerable sections of society, generally lack access to formal social security systems, including retirement savings or pension plans. MSY seeks to address this gap by offering an insurance-linked pension scheme tailored specifically for these individuals. A key feature of the Mazdoor Suraksha Yojana is its alignment with the Swavalamban scheme, a government-backed retirement pension program. Under Swavalamban, the central government offers a subsidy of Rs. 1000 per year to each participant in the scheme, making it more affordable and accessible for low-income workers. The workers themselves contribute a minimum of Rs. 100 annually, with the option to contribute more, up to Rs. 12,000, based on their financial capacity. This flexible contribution model ensures that even workers with limited or fluctuating incomes can participate and plan for their retirement.
